Thanks to a federally funded program provides free cell phones for seniors under the Lifeline Assistance program.  Cell phones have practically become a necessity these days.  Especially in cases of an emergency, you need to be able to call for help or answer important calls from friends and loved ones.  Mobile phones are the easiest way to stay in touch with the world and provide a safety net in case you need to make an emergency call.  Unfortunately, their high cost keeps them out of reach of thousands of senior citizens who need them the most.

In these tough economic times, you are no doubt struggling to keep up with all of your bills and might not even be able to afford a cell phone.  Luckily for you, there are several regional and national Lifeline cell phone carriers that offer free cell phones for seniors.  The three largest free cell phone carriers are

Assurance Wireless, Reachout Wireless, and Safelink Wireless.  In addition to these carriers, there are a host of regional carriers that provide service in numerous states (please see the navigation bar on the left for a list of the regional free cell phone carriers).

The great thing about these free government cell phone programs is that free means free!  You won’t have to pay a deposit, an activation fee, monthly cell phone service fees, or an application fee.  You will receive a free modern cell phone and up to 250 free monthly cell phone minutes every month.  There are no credit checks or background checks.  You simply have to apply for the free government cell phone program and if you qualify you will receive a free cell phone and free monthly minutes.  The only requirement that you must satisfy once accepted into the program is the annual certification process in which you must establish your ongoing eligibility for the program.

How Do You Qualify For Free Cell Phones For Seniors?

In most states, you can qualify for a free cell phone under income based eligibility guidelines  or government assistance based eligibility guidelines.   Not all states allow you to qualify under income based eligibility.  So please check your state’s specific eligibility requirements.

Income Based Guidelines

Under income based guidelines, you most likely qualify for a free cell phone for seniors if your total household income is at or under 135%-150% of the Federal Poverty Index.

Government Assistance Based Guidelines

To qualify for a free cell phone for seniors under the government assistance based guidelines you must participate in one or more government assistance programs.  While the list of qualifying programs varies from state to state, you most likely qualify for a Lifeline cell phone if you currently participate in Section 8, Food Stamps, Social Security Income, Medicaid, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), National School Lunch (free program only), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).  You should check your state’s specific requirements for eligible government assistance programs.

In addition to the above mentioned requirements, you must apply for the program from your home address.  Unfortunately, the government does not allow companies participating in the Lifeline program to ship the free cell phones to PO BOXs.   Lastly, only one Lifeline program phone is allowed per household.  This means that if you or a household member currently uses a Lifeline landline or cell phone, you cannot qualify for a Lifeline cell phone.
