Safelink Wireless: Alabama

Safelink Wireless, the largest provider of free government cell phones, offers service in Alabama.  Eligible applicants will receive a free cell phone (no fees charged what so ever) and free monthly cell phone service.  Users are free to choose one of the three cell phone plans below.

In order to qualify for Safelink Wireless service in Alabama, you must be a participant of one of the following public assistance programs:

  • Federal Public Housing Assistance/Section 8
  • Food Stamps
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Social Security Income (SSI)
  • National School Lunch (Free Program Only)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Medicaid

If you qualify for Safelink Wireless under this method, you do not have to provide supporting documentation, but sign under oath of perjury.  If you qualify under this method and the next, it is best to apply using this method, because the application is easier.

You may also be able to qualify for Safelink Wireless if your Total Houehold Income is at or under 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.  If you qualify under this method, you must provide documentation to support your application.  The table below shows the income guidelines for Safelink Wireless in Alabama.

The last two requirements for qualifying for a Safelink Wireless free government cell phone is that only one Lifeline Assistance phone is allowed per household.  So if you or a household member currently subscribe to Assurance Wireless, Reachout Wireless, Safelink Wireless, or Lifeline Assistance land line, you will not qualify for a free Safelink Wireless cell phone.

The last requirement to obtain a free government cell phone Safelink Wireless is that you must apply from a valid US mailing address.  No post office box may be used in your application form.  Unfortunately, homeless people will have difficulty meeting this requirement.  We advise homeless people to contact Safelink Wireless to see if there is any other way in which they can meet home residence requirement.
